Owego Free Academy football

Kay

The Indians offense looks to be strong this yr - w/Jesse Skellet coming in as starting qb and Kellen Dougherty playing back-up. Our running backs might need a little help with the loss of Phil Cappelli and Mike Simms, but we have Nate Pierce and Mike Winters to help carry the team. Adam Harrington looks to be a promising reciever as well as Josh Horton and Matt Luhrs. Tim Schmidt, already offered a Penn state scholarship for football, is a senior this year and one of the best offensive linemen. Gary Zwick, Jon Woodburn and Caleb Monell also look strong. Bill Herwerth is coming up to varsity in his freshman year (well pretend that hes not supposed to be in 11th grade) and Uno should see his time this season.

The Defense also looks good this year - Bestle and Monell are both fighting for the starting noseguard position - Ryan Brainard and Zwicker should also see time on the field this yr. Nate Pierce and Jeff McCarty will start at linebacker and both Woodburn and Herwerth (Uno) are top candidates for starting positions. Eric McCarty is a starter at cornerback as is Horton. Travis Tucker will man one of the safety positions and either Winters or Chad Halliday will start in the other safety spot.
Schedule:

October 20th - Elmira Free Academy
October 26th - Ithaca

CHENANGO FORKS vs OWEGO -- LOSS :(

Regretfully, I missed the first game of the season, but I believe the score was a lot to a little - from what I was told, Skellet had a promising start, as did most of our players - but we couldnt keep up the fight. Im still looking for information on this game - check back in about a week and I should have something more

OWEGO vs CORNING WEST -- Win 27-0 :)

Skellet threw two td's and ran one - the first was a 39 yrd pass to Harrington the play after pierce went down with a broken leg (see injury summary)- the 2nd td was a 26 yrd run by skellet - the third td was a 26 yrd pass to Josh Horton. Winters had a 9 yrd run for the final td of the game. Toal kicked 1 for three and Harrington scored a two point conversion off of a pass from Skellet to complete a 27-0 victory over Corning West.

ELMIRA ND vs OWEGO -- win 22-18 :)

Elmira Notre Dame scored the first td with a failed kick. Skellet scored the first td on a one yrd run with a failed kick. Winters had an 80 yrds punt return with a failed conversion. Toal had a 24 yrd kick for a field goal, leaving Owego in the lead 15-6 at the half. Ed had two td's, both with failed kicks and winters won the game on a 2 run td and toal completed the kick. With about 4 1/2 minutes remaining, Owego had three fourth-dwon conversions. Winters comleted 191 yrds on 22 carries. Owego was not expected to win this game, and walked away proud with an amazing win.

ELMIRA SOUTHSIDE vs OWEGO -- win :) 21-20

Owego won their homecoming game on close plays with Elmira - they were evenly matched through the whole game and ended the game in a 14-14 tie. They played for sudden death and on the first play, Elmira scored a touchdown. Harrington blocked the extra point attempt, leaving Owego with room to pull ahead. The very next play, Owego scored a td and toal kicked an easy extra point for the win.

ITHACA vs Owego - loss 40-13

Owego's final season game ended in defeat. Owego played strong, but didnt seem to have their heart into the game. Mistakes were made, interceptions were made, fumbles happened, errors that the strong-willed Owego team typically didnt make. Owego couldnt pull ahead, losing their last season game to Ithaca, who finished 3-4, leaving Owego's final team record at 4-4.

MAINE ENDWELL vs OWEGO - loss 34-21 :(

the season is over - a 34-21 loss to ME, who we lost to earlier in the season - the game was good - there were a few bad calls, but we have some of those in every game. Kellen started at qb and did surprisingly well for his first start this season - he scored two touchdowns off of one yrd runs, and threw a 29 yrd pass to skellet for another td. Toal completed all three kicks in the game for the extra point. Harrington, Luhrs, Winters and Horton all came out in the game with a few amazing catches. Mike Winters went 43 yrds on 10 runs. Horton went 26 yrds in 7 runs, Dougherty carried 23 yrds in 7 runs and Skellet carried 16 yrds in 3 runs. Dougherty completed 11 out of 21 passes, throwing a total of 157 yrds, 3 interceptions and 1 td, skellet went 2-4 throwing 29 yrds and 1 interceptino. Owego recieving was spectacular in this game, with Dougherty's combined throws and the help of Skellett, Luhrs, Winters, Harrington and Horton, Owego proved to ME that they could present a hell of a challenge. Springer, of course, was his typical cocky self - if my memory serves me correctly - i do believe he was sacked once in the game 8) - just wait till bball season - we'll get him then too:) - The game was close and some the calls sucked, but it was an amazing game - if you missed it you were crazy.

This years injuries:

Nate Pierce - in game two - against Corning West - one of our team stars comes out for the rest of season w/a broken leg - he did something to his tibea too - hes seein' doctor feterobich (my surgeon!) who's actually perty decent - he said that pierce's injury was one of the worst he'd ever seen. Pierce leaves the line-up and takes some of the hope for the year w/him.

Tim Schmidt - Schmidt had some probs w/his ankle earlier in the season and was taken out of the line-up so that he wouldnt risk an injury that would lose him his scholarship to penn state.

Mike Winters - fighting an agravating knee injury - Winters was carried off the field during the JC game - but still came back for the EFA game (althought it didnt help much) - hes still fighting an injury - but played strong.

Travis Tucker was taken out of the JC game for a back injury - and, like winters - returned for the EFA. Tucker was taken out for the last few games due to a past aggrivating knee injury that was acting up again because he was unable to see a doctor to get cleared to play again.

ME vs OWEGO -- loss 8-6 :(

ME scored the first touchdown w/a 3 yrd pass from Springer - ME's qb - they completed a two point conversion to take an 8-6 lead. Winter scored a 6 yrd td at the end of the third quarter and the two point conversion failed, leaving owego short of the win. Skellet went 2-8 passes for 24 yrds, throwing only one interception. Springer was 6-14, with 50 yrds, one touchdown and one interception. (i really dont like that kid) Winters ended the game with a total of 109 yrds on 21 carries, but not enough to give us the win. Hortinhad 58 yrds on 6 carries and Skellet had 35 yrds on 10 carries. Horton had a 45 yrd run and Herwerth intercepted one of Springers passes so overall, the team played very strong, but still fell short of victory.

OWEGO vs JC -- win 21-17 :)

The game was close all the way through. For every yrd we ran, they ran two and for every td - they matched it - but although it looked tough, owego never lost hope. An amazing play from skellet put kellen in with a td after an amazing catch - a hell of a 16th b-day prez for dougherty! it wasnt until the last minute of the game that skellet threw a 34 yrd pass to win the game 21-17.

ELMIRA FA vs OWEGO -- loss 33-7 :(

EFA scored 5 consecutive td's to take an easy lead, giving them confidence towards the rest of the game. Derrick Beckworth rushed 139 yrds w/3 td's - one run being 77 yrds after recovering a fumble on the owego 23 yrd line. Another Indians fumble on the 40 led Beckworth to another td after a 35 yrd TD - EFA had a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. Owego finally got in the game when Kellen Dougherty had a 9 yrd pass to Harrington and Toal completed the kick. Winters went 33 yrds on 11 runs, McCarty went 43 yrds on 2 runs, Skellett went 16 yrds on 6 runs, Dan Cumm had a 7 yrd run, Luhrs had 8 yrds in 2 runs and Dougherty had 6 yrds in 2 runs - over all the team did better than expected, but could not compare to the huge, hard-hitting EFA team who is still undefeated.

<----On the left ME spartans vs. Owego - 85 - go Flamer! Last game of the season - but Owego played well 8)
