Owego Beaten in STAC semis

Owego tennis coach Chris Corlett's first trip to the Southern Tier Athletic Conference playoffs nded with a 5-2 loss to Horseheads. 

 The Blue Raiders swept all for singles matches in straight sets and also won the first doubles atch. Sharath Bhagavatula defeated recently crowned Class B singles champion Alvara odriguez, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 1 singles match.

Horseheads advances to the STAC championship and will await the winner of Wednesday's emifinal between Vestal and Chenango Valley.

Boys Tennis: Doubles team rallies to keep Owego unbeaten

Owego remained undefeated with a 4-3 victory at Oneonta on Thursday in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference boys tennis match.   Nick Natishak and Kurt Wunder battled back from a 5-2 second-set deficit to win 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in first doubles for Owego (7-0).
The duo forced a second-set tiebreaker and the match victory clinched the Indians' winning point. Oneonta fell to 4-1.

Tennis: Owego stays unbeaten by topping Oneonta

Owego completed its first undefeated season since coach Chris Corlett took over in 1994, with a 5-2 win over second-place Oneonta Thursday in Southern Tier Athletic Conference play. 

Derek West won the deciding third singles match, and Owego (13-0) swept doubles play to beat the defending divisional champs for the second time this season. West defeated Ben Kabat, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

"Kabat went to states last year, and we know it was a tough match," Corlett said.

Owego's top three singles players finished with a 39-13 record in singles play, while Owego's doubles players went 35-4.

Oneonta falls to 8-2.
